Central Bank warns of a new scam involving virtual card images.

The Central Bank of Russia has issued a warning about a new fraudulent scheme involving the creation of virtual images of bank cards. This scheme, which has been actively used by scammers, targets unsuspecting individuals through phone calls or messaging apps.

How the Scam Works

Scammers contact victims, claiming that their funds are at risk of being stolen. They then convince the victim to download a fake Central Bank app. Once the app is installed, victims are prompted to enter a bank confirmation code, supposedly for authorization purposes. In reality, this code grants scammers access to the victim's card details.

The fake app creates a virtual image of the victim's bank card, which scammers use remotely on their own devices. This allows them to withdraw money from ATMs that support contactless technology, effectively using the victim's card without physical possession.
