In a twist that could make even the most seasoned marine biologist raise an eyebrow, wild fish in the Mediterranean have demonstrated an uncanny ability to recognize divers by the colors of their wetsuits. This discovery, emerging from a recent study, challenges long-held assumptions about the cognitive limits of marine life. Researchers observed that sea bass, those sleek underwater opportunists, not only noticed but actively engaged with divers, particularly those who brought snacks.
Maëlan Tomassek, one of the researchers, described the fish behavior as "genuinely annoying." The sea bass seemed to have a knack for remembering which divers were the generous ones, trailing them like underwater groupies. To test this further, the team conducted an experiment using shrimp as bait and divers in different colored gear. Katinka Soller, another researcher, spent 12 days training the fish to follow her while she wore a bright red wetsuit. Once the fish got the hang of it, she switched to a more subdued outfit, feeding only those that followed her. The fish, quick learners that they are, soon began appearing out of nowhere, with some even earning nicknames like Bernie and Alfie.
When Tomassek joined the experiment in a differently colored wetsuit, the fish initially followed both divers. However, they soon realized that Tomassek wasn’t the one with the treats and began favoring Soller. This behavior wasn’t just a fluke; it was a calculated decision. The fish weren’t just following out of habit—they were actively choosing who to follow based on visual cues. When both divers wore identical outfits, the fish struggled to tell them apart, confirming that color played a pivotal role in their decision-making.
